Promotional activities for the Free Trade Agreement between Colombia and the United States generate more than US $2 billion in business expectations
August 17th, 2012. PROCOLOMBIA has organized 72 events for the promotion of business opportunities that have emerged with the FTA, where 1,815 exporters and 647 buyers have participated generating business expectations of more than US$2 billion.
So said the president of PROCOLOMBIA Maria Claudia Lacouture, during her presentation “Colombia, how is the FTA with the United States advancing so far” during the Annual Congress of Confecamaras held in Cartagena, Colombia.
“We have identified in detail the business opportunities in the agro industrial, manufacturing, textile and apparel, and service sectors across every Colombian region and state in the US and this has allowed us to provide accurate information that has already translated into business expectations of US$2 billion,” explained the President of Proexport.
Activity highlights include the Colombian week in New York form June 27th to June 29th with five different events being held simultaneously: Exploratory mission, business matchmaking forum, clothing industry showcase, and seminars for tourism promotion and investment.
“Participation reached 330 buyers from 26 states in the US; 535 exporters from 18 departments in Colombia with 80 percent being SMEs. The showcase organized at the Waldorf Astoria had a turnout of 1000 attendees who were familiarized with the best Colombian textiles, apparel and accessories,” established Lacouture.
Additionally, 9,400 people from 27 departments have participated in 7 opportunity seminars which have been broadcasted on the internet to all Zeikys (information centers) and chambers of commerce, so that a greater number of businesses understand the advantages offered by the agreement that entered into full force on May 15th, 2012.
During the next few months 400 businesses are expected to participate in 25 events that aim to promote the advantages under the FTA, along with 200 buyers from the United States in national events.
The FTA also offers advantages for new foreign direct investment. In this sector PROCOLOMBIA will also actively develop 19 agendas with potential investors in 8 different markets to take advantage of the FTA.
“We have identified investment opportunities for American businesses in the areas of BPO, Software, agribusiness, construction materials, autoparts, tourism, textiles and cosmetics, while continuing to work with businesses in all states to encourage investment in Colombia,” explained the President of Proexport.
Aside from one to one meetings, PROCOLOMBIA will carry out 11 events to promote Colombia as an investment destination across 9 markets in the United States before the end of the year.
