Colombia: being considered for the construction of sustainable distribution centers by various multinationals

Cosmetics and consumer goods companies are betting on the construction of their distribution centers according to best practices in environmental sustainability. This is an irreversible worldwide trend and in Colombia, it is viable.

Multinational companies such as Avon, Procter & Gamble and Yambal are making millionaire investments in the construction of distribution centers in Colombia. This is one of the strategies that several companies of the productive sector in Colombia are using to adjust to the global reality in which it is not possible to be profitable without being environmentally responsible.

Avon, the cosmetics company, started the construction of a new distribution center in Guarne, Colombia, on April 27. The company purchased an 180,000 square meter lot, of which 28,000 will be used for the construction of the center, and will be composed of two warehouses and an administrative building. The value of the investment is estimated at USD 50 million.

This construction will be equipped with energy consumption monitoring systems. Solar panels will be used and rainwater will be reused. The idea is to not only reduce costs, but rather to also follow the tendency toward environmental awareness that the company has implemented worldwide.

Another case is that of Procter & Gamble, which also decided to invest in a distribution center in Colombia. The company invested USD 25 million in a 150,000 square meter lot. The center will contribute to energy savings of approximately 25%, thanks to the use of solar panels and heaters, and a carbon footprint reduction of 1,871 tons of CO2 every year during once in operation.

At the same time, by taking advantage of rainwater residues and the suppression of water residue runoffs, water consumption at the center will be reduced by 51%.

For Jorge Alberto Uribe López, President of Procter & Gamble for Latin America, “Colombia is building solid bases to reach the highest levels of competitiveness and wellbeing,” which is why they have decided to invest in Colombia.

The Peruvian company Yanbal, dedicated to the production and commercialization of beauty products, inaugurated a distribution center in Tenjo. With the opening of the modern distribution center, the company is preparing to cover with more than 800 products the Colombian, Bolivian, Ecuadorean, Peruvian, Guatemalan, and eventually Spanish markets from Tenjo, Colombia.

According to the general manager of the organization, Jorge Bohórquez, the center involves an infrastructure project constructed over 24 thousand square meters, which will have the capacity to attend 24 thousand orders per day.

In 2011 the company expects to expand and remodel the production plant it currently owns in Facatativá in the Department of Cundinamarca, as well as implement other changes in the rest of the plants it has in various parts of Colombia.
